Our co-founders, Kenny and RT, recently had the opportunity to chat with Paul Pellinger, co-founder and vision leader at Recovery Unplugged. The three old friends recall a conversation from years ago, when Paul first told them about his idea of starting a treatment center based on music. Paul explains his frustration with the high rate of relapse among those who went into treatment, inspiring his goal of helping people truly recover. He began experimenting with music, noting the psychological responses and processes of music that play into evidence-based recovery models. Paul puts the concept in simple terms:

In essence, what we’re doing at Recovery Unplugged is we’re teaching clients a tool that they can use to make recovery more of a payoff than getting high.

A great part about music-assisted treatment? You don’t have to be a musician to benefit from it. Paul admits that he is not a musician, nor are 90% of the clients at Recovery Unplugged.

The group also talks about the current pandemic situation, and the impact it’s having on people seeking and in recovery. Paul mentions that with the isolation that the pandemic creates, we need tools to help change our mood. Music, of course, is a great tool to help lift our spirits.
